Why is fanatical religion/fascism so fun in fiction?

I think by its nature, and ours, facisim/ these empires of the past ruled by totalitarian figures play on imagination. The story that gets people to give up themselves their identity and ambitions must be pretty good. Atleast while its consequences are kept well out of sight. They grab our imaginations and entice our power hungry brains with anything we want it to. Egyptian and Roman stories of god like leaders and warriors standing out from the rest through glory and virtue and building a safe haven from the stuggles of life are never true, but we always want them to be. The stories take us away from the truth that its all just people surviving, unless we chase a story...or something.
