Fargo wasn't about a crime in the mid west. It was about the people of the mid west.

Yo. The Coen brothers are from an affluent suburb of a major metropolitan area. They didn't grow up with the caricatures of Fargo. Nobody did. I suppose there is room for ambivalent feelings in an art form such as a movie, but 'loving'? Surely the heaviest tone is mockery and disgust? In fact Jerry's greatest brutality may not be the crime he arranges, but his incessant (and superficially) up-beat attitude while doing so? If I recall correctly, there's an interview with Frances McDormand on the DVD in which she mentions Joel found the cheap, neurotic friendliness of MN oppressive when he was growing up. I'm not sure where you get the positive vibes. The ending? It seems a little tacked on, but I suppose that is an interesting choice in itself.
