In Faroe Islands they are slaughtering dolphins and whales. Right now. In a Public event.

I have found that a whole lot of vegan arguments are based on the idea of modern civilization and modern food production where this sort of thing is not necessary.

I don't lose sleep about, for example, Amazonian tribes hunting meat. All of my sentiments on this subject are predicated upon necessity. Yes, on the desert island if you're going to die if you don't spear a seabird, spear the seabird.

But the point is no one in the developed world is in those circumstances.

I am not sympathetic to "cultural tradition" practices whereby people do shit just because that shit has always been done, regardless of necessity. This is the excuse always trotted out by (for example) the Japanese when it comes to whale hunting.

Or Americans serving turkey for Thanksgiving.

Tradition is less important than justice. Culture is less important than justice. Nearly everything is less important than justice.

So much of how this all became possible for me - I'll cop to this - is how easy it is. I have a local grocery store with an enormous produce section, and a lot of that produce is from within 150 miles of where I live (its origin is labeled as such to promote it).

This is one of the reason why, in the US, food deserts are such a problem.
