Fat Rant Tuesday

Doing a weight loss challenge with several of my coworkers (all dudes, ages 30-35 ish). While it’s encouraging that these fellows at least want to lose weight, there is an alarming amount of hostility towards BMI and specifically BMI-derived healthy weight ranges. Miscellaneous descriptions:

1) One guy is 5’7” and 205 (BMI=32, obese). Somewhat muscular but nothing exceptional. He refuses to accept the notion that he is obese, thinks BMI is bullshit, and wants to lose about 5-10 pounds when in reality he needs to get down to about 160 or so.

2) One dude is a keto fan and is 5’9” 190 pounds (BMI=28, overwgt). He is offended that BMI classes him as overweight and also thinks BMI is BS on the basis of it not accounting for muscle mass. Like the first guy, he’s moderately built but not exactly The Rock.

3) One dude is about 6’2” and started off as BMI=35. He needs to get to 190 to be in the healthy range but thinks this will render him an emaciated skeleton.

People are dumb. /rant
