Feeding cows seaweed could slash global greenhouse gas emissions, researchers say: "They discovered adding a small amount of dried seaweed to a cow's diet can reduce the amount of methane a cow produces by up to 99 per cent."

This reminds me of the 90s science fiction show, seaQuest DSV.

For those not familiar it followed the crew of a high-tech submarine operated by an international organization. Basically, it was underwater Star Trek.

It existed in a near-future Earth that had been ravaged by humanity and exhausted it's natural resources, forcing humanity to look to the seafloor for resources. Greenhouse gases got so bad that there were giant land-based towers whose sole purpose was to suck the CO2 out of the air.

Anyways the reason I mention it is because in this fictional universe, cattle production had been banned because of the methane emissions. Occasionally the crew would complain about their inability to get a real hamburger, or occasionally encounter black-market beef.

Although in the early nineties people weren't as worried about global warming. So the show claimed that cows were banned because the methane contributed to the hole in the ozone layer, which was an issue more in the public consciousness at the time.
