I feel like this belongs here

I really enjoy the little programming experience that I have had. It's something that I instantly took a liking to when I was first introduced to it while at a university for EE and CE degrees (Which I screwed up ten years ago by partying and not going to school).

Now I want nothing more than to make software development my career. But I have no idea where to get properly started with it. I have a few textbooks and have tried some online stuff, but I always feel like I'm wandering aimlessly around the internet.

My rough plan is to abandon my military career and go to school for either CS or SE ( not sure which is more applicable to me, I want to develop software in some way for application purposes).

I apologize for the long post, I am just thinking out loud. I am also trying to see if my experience will help in any way (Electronics Tech for Nuclear power). If anyone has some helpful advice I would truly appreciate it, thank you. Reading this post and it's comments reaffirmed how much this career field applies to my personality.
