I feel like I've been lied to about this industry

OK this will be long and half of it will be bullshit so take what advice you will

First you look Muslim or Arab or Indian. Racism is a thing because of unconscious bias, most of the industry is white guys or Asians. For example take this thing https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/canada/takeatest.html you will see most people have a bias against black people.

So you will have to prove you are "smart" and or able to work in that type of environment / culture. Probably you will need to change your image. Maybe look like some of these guys with the sunglasses lol.

You cannot hide it so don't try and hide it (you don't want to work for racists anyway) but maybe take a Romanized name as either a middle name or a nickname. As proof you are trying to integrate. It sucks, but play the game. Do not be fake don't be someone you are not, but also you are fighting the stereotype of middle aged IBM Indian IT Worker. You do not want to look like a middle aged IBM Indian IT Worker. I am sure you have done the slicked back hair and the sunglasses in your life before right? So it's not fake it is playing the game if the market wants to fuck with you fuck with it back.

The goal is to be someone people can work with, that is it. It is like that show "to be a hitman" the guy dresses up as a hitman now what is a hitman? A hitman is anything to anyone he changes his look whenever he needs to. Same for you.

So you need the "web developer" look... you say hiking, poker. Show your muscles, a ripped shirt, show you workout. Show that you are fun. Redo the site to be professional but also fun this is hard to measure you don't want to look like on vacation all the time but you also don't want what you have now. Also you can get a large social media presence. See my blog http://www.brianlim.ca it has years and years of technical comments and bugfixes. I am very obviously a technical person that's all people need a confidence level before hiring you.

You MUST be confident. You play poker, it is poker you are not a JUNIOR anything you are a developer or even a software engineer.

You look a little bit older. Maybe set in your ways and hard to teach, so maybe places are hesitant to take you. So your resume should contain a lot more. I would suggest taking Harvard CS50 and getting some computer science concepts. Probably at the least algorithms and data structures, but also object oriented programming, .NET, Java, etc. and probably RDBMS. Basically, you are trying to show that you "know a lot for your age". Good thing is that Harvard CS50 is free and can be completed in a short few months. So what you need is a skill matrix. Basically list everything and anything under the sun that you have even a tiny bit of exposure to, to prove you have breadth. Then, spike in 1 or 2 things with some major projects. Basically your resume looks "thin" you don't want the thin look you want to look like you have done a lot and know a lot and can win on the first day.

If you are in a shit location that may override ALL other things. You will need to move, or to hookup with whatever small startup stuff there is in your city. Most major cities have at least one a year. If your location is fucked.

Finally. If you have tried everything and everything else is fucked (probably due to location) then you can use your skills to earn money for yourself. Maybe you can try affiliate marketing or dropshipping. Also if you have no job. Get a source of income immediately do not wait. Also if you are serious long term. Think about relocating.

Hackathons are on weekends you can drive to the city they are happening in and do it there... do not let geography stop you. Forget about "relocating" nobody will pay for your relocation it is NONE of their business get a P.O. Box near the city where you want to work and that is your address. You can rent an apartment there AFTER you get your job you can build in the relocation cost into your salary range when you negotiate details like that are NONE of their business. As long as you can legally work in the country that is.

Good luck let me know how it goes. This is capitalism it's half bullshit and all sales.
