I feel stupid for not knowing enough networking as a sys admin.

Also, the book recommends two Catalyst 3560 switches and an 1841 router. I grabbed all of those from one vendor on Ebay for $106. Also, get one of these.

I'm working my way through the book (about 2/3rd the way through) and having a blast; it's great having real hardware to screw around with. After the new year I'm going after the CCNA via Wendell Odom's stuff and CBTNuggets.

To the original poster: if you have no interest in certification, work your way through the 'month of lunches' book; there will be numerous 'aha!' moments on the way through it.
