Feeling overwhelmed and don't know where to start

You can start by having the kids write a 6 Word Story style autobiography. Introduce the concept with the "For Sale: Baby Shoes. Never Worn" poem. Have them analyze that and discuss how just a few words can mean a lot. Then, look up 6 Word Stories on NPR. Have them listen to a few and analyze what made them interesting. Then they'll write their own 6 word story about themselves. Start by working on the title, just the 6 words. Then, give them a format to write a full autobiographical essay. Background, rising action, twist/climax, then moral of the story. Then do the peer editing full writing process. This will kill a LOT of time and give you time to get caught up, plus it's a good way to get to know your students in the begining of the year.
