I am so sick of this Western perception that only Muslim extremists exhibit crazy behavior or commit acts of terror. This ideology creates a segregated mindset. If you are Muslim, please go out today and befriend a westerner. Simply through active inclusion, we can defeat the acts of terror committed by both sides due to this segregated mindset. MASS MURDER OF INNOCENT PEOPLE IS DONE BY ALL TYPES INCLUDING US GOV'T and US CITIZENS. THESE ACTS OF TERROR ARE ALWAYS COMMITED BECAUSE ONE GROUP FEELS MARGINALIZED OR ATTACKED BY THE OTHER. Maybe this time, instead of responding with violence and segregation, go find a Muslim person you've never met and befriend them. Embrace them and tell them you respect them and view them as equals. Maybe if some french people did this, these extremists wouldn't have carried out these attacks. Muslims in Paris are treated as second class citizens. They are %10 of the population, but 60-70% of their jail population is Muslim. They live in poverty there excluded from jobs, loans, homes, basic services. Maybe if we actively just asked them how we can help them feel more included, offer services that help integrate them into the economy and community and embraced them this shit would stop happening. We need to stop being the macho tough guy and take a more therapeutic approach. The war on Drugs does not work for the same reason. Telling offenders, "don't do something wrong, or we will ruin you life for you" does not work, it only makes the offender hate the punisher even more. Americans hate police and DEA. People need help, not punishment. The same concept applies. Help comes in the form of trust in a friend. If you just migrated to a new place, wouldn't you want a local person to come up to you and say, "we accept you and we welcome you". This solution won't stop terrorism altogether, but I believe it will help things immensely. And at the very least, our governments can stop retaliating by also committing acts of terror and sacrificing innocent lives. So as a sit here in Minneapolis, MN I will actively try to befriend a Muslim today and I hope all others around the world and especially in Paris do the same.
