I have a felony on my record. Is electrical engineers or going to vocational school for electrical a good idea?

Honestly, I would try to get a job as an electrician.

It will be grunt work at the beginning since you don't know anything, but you will learn for a few years and eventually learn how to do the trade.

Getting hired as a grunt is a lot easier than going to a trade school then getting a job.

If you graduate from a trade school, you will still probably only get an entry level position, have debt, lose time, and not even know if you like it or not.

By trying to get a job first at the lowest level, it lowers their risk and yours. That way, if you don't like it, then you can walk away without really losing anything except a few months.

And, after you work successfully for an electrician for a year or two, you will now a lot more and it will be much easier to get your license.

Another good thing about being an electrician is that in construction, a lot of guys have records, maybe not felonies, but a lot DUI's, arrests and other shit. So, it won't be as bad when you compare yourself to them.

Where as, if you go to college for electrical engineering, get a degree, then try to get a job, it will look a lot worse because you are comparing yourself to engineers.

That's not to say that an engineering career is out of the question, but you could first become an electrician first and see if you want to go from there.

Good luck!
