being on time for shit is just a good trait to have in general

i agree that turning kids into worker drones shouldnt be the goal of school, but this goes beyond work- deadlines teach responsibility and being responsible and dependable will extend to almost every relationship (romantic/friend/professional) you’ll ever have. and speaking from experience, nothing will teach you to be responsible faster than turning in an assignment late and seeing the grade for that shit get cut in half lol. in the same way that we try to teach overarching values at school like respect, empathy, perseverance when things are tough etc i think we should push responsibility as much as possible
