Fewer nursing home residents with dementia are receiving feeding tubes, a result of increasing evidence that suggests the practice causes unnecessary suffering

You know, I am just going to go there with this one.

I am a nurse. I have worked in long term care, and I have not read any responses. I think that is important to point out.

Basically, nobody wants to have a PEG tube. It's families that fight for shit one way or another. People THINK that advance directives will settle it all, but that isn't the case. In my experience, it's been a fight for months or years when other family members contest them.

This happens often.

I am not going to discuss motivation because that's basically a rabbit hole.

I will discuss the tragedy of what I have seen though.

Men and women that wanted to die with dignity are reduced to feeding tubes and nearly hourly updates to make sure they are still with us.

In the year that I could tolerate working in that situation, I'd seen at least 5-6 people sent to the ER to replace tube that they had removed on their own.

I am struggling to really say what else I think I should be said. None of this is about me or the people that care for others. I just want to make this discussion as public as possible.
