Film Room Friday

Hello folks and welcome to the seventh entry of these posts. This week will wrap the ILB group and next week we will take a look into the Running back group starting with the kid from Indiana Tevin Coleman.

Benardrick McKinney, Why?

McKinney is the last top prospect in the position group he lacks the flashiness of Kendricks, Dawson, and Perryman but makes up for it as pure fundamentalist who is going to get the job done in stopping the run. His tackling is also a thing of beauty when he takes you head on.

Stats for career: 3 years

  • Height: 6-4
  • Weight: 246
  • Tackles: 243, 122 solo, 121 assisted, 19.5 Tackles for loss
  • Sacks: 7.5
  • Fumbles: 1 forced

Game Film

Vs. UAB

McKinney's game films are a little boring at times because he plays his assignment so well. One thing to note is that he has trouble fighting off blocks to the point were sometimes he doesn't try. Once McKinney is blocked he stays blocked. He tends to play high and isn't too good at flowing at toward the football. He is good at rushing the QB though. May be a good convert to OLB.

Vs. LSU

McKinney has a more impressive game reads the run plays really well, takes on blocks, plays good goal line defense. But his tendency to play high creates struggles for him especially during cut blocks.

Other games

Overall

  • Strengths: If nothing else he is reliable, doesn't take too many unnecessary risks. Can occupy blockers to allow teammates to flow to the ball and make a play. Has a canny ability of getting good edge rushing might by good convert to and EDGE guy.

  • Weaknesses: His footwork is not great; gets caught in traffic too much, chop blocks pretty much stop him dead. He can occupy blockers but cannot fight them off for pursuit, once he is blocked he stays blocked. Stiff in coverage and leaves too much space on his man a liability overall. He played well in the college scheme but isn't a star not what the Colts need, we need play makers.

This may have turned into a bashing more than a scouting report but he doesn't compare to the top 3 linebackers and may just be a consolation prize for who ever misses out on those guys. He is not bad just above average, but for the colts after a season of average defense needs more than he can offer.
