Final Fantasy VII "Remake" is a misleading title

You're either intentionally obtuse or just really not picking up on this.

Imagine if they said they were going to remake Star Wars: A New Hope. You watch it and it's faithful enough to the original, but there are some things that are different, but that's whatever. It still seems to be a remake. Then, near the end, when you expect the Death Star to be destroyed, you find out that Darth Vader, after dying in Episode 6, travels back through time as a force ghost, possesses his former body, and personally foils the rebels' attempts to destroy it. He explains that he has seen what comes to pass and is making sure that, this time, his plans go as he intends them.

That's not a remake. That's a linear progression of Darth Vader's story following the events of his last appearance. That makes the new movie a sequel following Darth Vader's story that happens to take place in the past.

This is not nearly as complicated as you're making it out to be.
