I've had this conversation with my own wife numerous times, just as a random hypothetical. Our general feeling is that if our kid is guilty of some heinous crime, then literally the entire world is there to punish them and make them feel as guilty as they ought to--we both feel like every person deserves to have at least one person that will love them no matter what they've done, and it's appropriate that that is their parents.

I honestly don't know what I would do if I found out my kid did something like this. But I'm honest enough about myself to admit at least that I know know. I think I wouldn't turn them in, but I would literally do everything I could to convince them to turn themselves in, avoid self-harm, and I'd pay to make sure they had a good legal defense to plead their case down and avoid them being overcharged .
