Finally!! I was waiting for his take on the situation.

I want you to follow with me through a very simple chain of advancements:

1940: to look at the screen with moving pictures, you have to go to the movies (limited selection).

1955: to look at the screen with moving pictures, you have to go to the movies (limited selection) or you can watch TV (limited selection, but don't have to go anywhere).

1985: to look at the screen with moving pictures, you can go to the movies (limited selection) or you can watch TV (limited selection, can stay home) or you can watch VCR (more selection, can stay home)

2020: to look at the screen with moving pictures, you can reach into your pocket and watch pretty much anything you want, be it any movie, people talking, comedy, animation, game footage, anything. Plus, you have a computer, which is a screen, plus you have a TV, which is a bigger screen. All capable of showing moving pictures.

Can you just admit to yourself for a moment that, leaving aside all romantic ideals, there's no functional reason to go to the theater whereas there once was one and that this in turn changed the theaters?
