Financial literacy is essential

Honestly don't know what you're problem is. No need to be condescending.

You keep accusing me of stuff for no reason. I'm not being condescending. And neither am I humble nor bragging or any combination thereof. What you're seeing is frustration. Because you see when I came here I had no idea whatsoever of what 401k, w4 and all that other stuff were yet I somehow managed to learn it. And so did 45 million other immigrants in the US. Yet you can't manage this and want to put undue burden on the education system god knows why. How do you think millions of other people manage it every year?

but when you're in school, you learn what is taught.

Which is nothing in my case. I was taught nothing about any of those subject. I wasn't even born here. And I most definitely didn't spend first 18 years of my life growing around people who went to job interviews, filed taxes, went to work. No one even spoke English where I'm from.

Actually let's go over this list of yours and see if it's really hard to learn. Let's start with the most egregious example - W4. W4 is handed to you by your employer when start working and the form itself contains everything you need to know. And even if after reading it through a few times you still don't understand what it's about - you go and ask the person who handed it to you what you should put into it. That's literally what HR people are there for. And they will tell you "just your name and social" which is the case of 99% of 18 year olds.

401k - again, that's something that only your employer can provide you. And when they do, they will explain to you what it is and what it's for. And after they do, the representative of a company that will manage your 401k account will do that as well. And they will give you a stack of pamphlets, materials and god knows what else.

Job interviews. I don't know even know where to start. First and foremost there isn't a hard skill called "job interview". Job interview's whole purpose is to find out if you are going to be a good fit for the job. You can't teach people to be or not to be a good fit for every fucking job they are going to apply to. As with every communication between people up to you and the other party to see if the two of you are going to fit well together. That's literally all that it's about. I have never learned to to do job interviews. I have never even read up on them. I go there, I talk to people (which is not easy let me assure you, especially when it's another immigrant like myself, speaking with an accent I've never heard before). And I tell them why I am there. Then I ask them why I am there, as in what they are looking for. Then we throw more questions at each other and then we arrive to an understanding. Or not. And yes, sometimes I'm informed I'm not a good fit. Sometimes people start treating me like I'm an idiot after hearing my accent - which is fine by the way, really tells me right away I don't want to work there. And sometimes I tell them I'm not interested. And that's all fine.

And and by the way. I interview people too. And no one taught that to me. But I still know what to look for.

The answer to most of these questions is just knowing what you want from life. And no one can teach it to you. Maybe instead of teaching young people how to fill their w4 forms, American high schools should simply start asking them questions. I don't know, I wouldn't know the first thing about American high schools. I never attended one.
