First episode of "Single By 30", Youtube Red series by Wong Fu Productions

Yeah, I couldn't get into it. The original was a lot better. The characters were down-to-earth, which didn't stress the abilities of the cast. The premise wasn't unnecessarily complicated: girl moves home, runs into childhood friend, renews decade-old romantic tension. Simple. The tone was calm and the settings were believable. It seemed real.

This one plays like it's trying to be a sitcom, and not a good one. It's unfocused and poorly executed. The jokes and ridiculous characters detract from the romance between the two leads. The male protagonist's new background is cliched: boring, nonconfrontational guy has a crush on his female best friend? Come on. I wanted to watch real-life adults talk about real-life insecurities, not tired characters get caught up in a predictable sequence of interruptions and misunderstandings. I didn't get to see much of the subtle chemistry between Kina Grannis and Harry Shum Jr. that made me like the original so much, either.

I had been waiting for this series for months. Big disappointment.
