[FIRST IMPRESSIONS] J.I.D - DiCaprio 2

I’m really enjoying it so far, I think it showcases JID’s strengths, but to be honest I’m left wanting a little bit more, and this is coming from a big JID fan and someone who had The Never Story as AOTY 2017. It feels like a mixtape, with hardly any direction that doesn’t follow the DiCaprio theme one may have expected from the trailer and cover art.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the mixtape vibe and there’s nothing wrong with that, but after listening endlessly to TNS and all 3 Spillage Village tapes, I’m left feeling that he didn’t reach his full potential here. ‘Slick Talk’ might be my favorite JID song ever, but there were a few parts of the album I haven’t been able to get behind (the hook on ‘Off Deez’; ‘Tiiied’, ‘Skrawberries’ and ‘Hot Box’ are all good songs but they don’t feel great, they just feel... lazy? I’m not sure what it is. Not a huge fan of the beat on “Mounted Up” either, but he does kill that last verse.

I really do love this project but maybe I had too high of expectations. I think a lot of it will grow on me (I usually don’t like rating albums that just came out) but right now I can’t see this topping TNS for me. (Although I wouldn’t be surprised if it did one day) I don’t want to say he’s regressed in many ways but I do wish I left the album with more of a concept or ideas that gave food for thought.

Calling it a 8/10 right now with fav tracks being ‘Slick Talk’, ‘Off da Zoinkys’, ‘Workin Out’ and ‘Just Da Other Day”
