The first light saber duel in Star Wars, Obi-Wan vs Vader, reimagined

The reimagining (which agreed looks great) and the comments claiming it’s better than the original all don’t understand why the original was great, and it’s also a good illustration of why I hate most movies today.

The fight isn’t there to look cool or be its own set piece. It’s a literal manifestation of the metaphorical conflict between the characters. They’re old, they used to be close, and they are each the last of their kind (they think, certainly the last of their era). They don’t do big flashy shit because the fight is mental and emotional, not physical. You can see it on Obi-Wan’s face and Vader’s body language.

The fight is brief for the same reason. Obi-Wan didn’t come to win a battle of lightsabers. Vader should have known that with how quickly his old mentor surrendered but was too blinded by hate to see what Obi-Wan showed him with his sacrifice. If it looks like Obi-Wan is doing his best to win it undercuts the entire emotional underpinning of the scene. If it goes on for a long time, or they both look physically capable and all their conflict is expressed through physical conflict it undercuts the scene. When the director uses tired old tropes like the slow two handed grip on the lightsaber it only demonstrates how poorly they understand the scene and why it’s in the movie. And they either don’t know or don’t care the real damage it would inflict on the story to shoot the scene the way it’s done in this video.
