First project I shot on the a7s: AXIOM - Sci-Fi Drama Short Film

Thanks for watching the film!

As you know from the title, AXIOM was shot on the Sony a7s Mark I, but also had small portions shot on the Canon C100 Mark I (the scene from 4:28 to 5:08 and the ending scene starting at 8:11). I utilized as much natural light as possible, but I did end up adding some Kino Flo 4 Bank lights here and there to fill in shadows. But it was mainly shot in natural light.

This was the first film I shot where I applied meaning to every shot, and every choice I made fit with the story. The first half of the film is shot strictly on tripod and slider to create a calm, relaxed setting to emulate what K, the main character, was feeling. She was feeling relaxed and at ease, like everything was fine. Then, in the second half (5:10) after K starts to feel nervous and confused, I use a shoulder rig to add some intensity to the shots; to make the audience feel like something isn't quite right. Then in the last two minutes of the film, I switch back to tripod shots in order to emulate a relaxed feeling, now that (spoiler) K meets with O again and is put at ease.

This was also the first film that I've used haze on. I bought a few Atmosphere Aerosol cans for the shoot and used them to add diffusion and a subtle dream-like effect to some scenes, mainly the scenes shot in the bedroom. While it wasn't very noticeable and didn't produce the effect I wanted, it was still fun to use it and it did add a little bit of dimension.

Overall, I'm really proud of the final product and it was worth the work I put into it. I hope you enjoy it too. If you have any questions or comments, please tell me and I'll respond to as many as I can. Thanks for watching!

And in case you're wondering, the whole crew including myself are juniors in high school.
