First visit to the record store of 2019 was successful

Getz/Gilberto is one of my all time favorites. Everything from the musicianship to the songwriting to the meticulous production. If that's one of the original gatefold versions, you'll find some interesting tidbits about how it was recorded.

Getz is at his absolute best on this record, but definitely don't tune out when he stops playing. Joao Gilberto's work on guitar and vocals is a perfect complement for the monster of chill they built. In an album of absolute gold from beginning to end, it almost feels irresponsible to pick a favorite, but O Grande Amor gives me some feels that are hard to describe. The song chugs along, while Gilberto's vocals give it a sort of nihilistic beauty. Like he's unaware of what they're doing, but completely dialed in at the same time. I kind of picture him as a brazilian version of Lou Reed during those verses; an expressionless face in blacked out sunglasses effortlessly plucking the guitar while delivering the lines. And then you get Jobim (who composed most fo the album) coming in on the keys with a minimalist contribution that fits like a glove.
