Flicks Change My View Thread

suspend my disbelief

You're not supposed to do that with every movie. Would you watch Spaceballs for the story and expecting to be sucked into the universe? Or Holy Grail? The Cornetto trilogy are comedies highlighting the absurdities of cinema tropes exactly by making the movies silly. They're not made for the plots, they're made for the humor.

This isn't saying that comedies can't have good stories. I think the Cornetto trilogy has decent stories with great characters that, despite the obvious point being the satire and silliness of having big-ass shootouts in a small English village, manage to get me invested in the characters because they've got nuance. But I don't take the setting seriously. It's supposed to be seen as silly, so discrediting it for being silly is... silly.
