Flicks Change My View Thread

Oh boy this will probably be unpopular, but oh well.

Almost every classic and generally "old movie" I've seen has often been very awkwardly and poorly filmed, and often to the detriment of the overall quality, the sound is also sometimes poor as well as the actors are generally not very good.

To give an example, say Solaris yesterday, and while I didn't have any problems with the actors, the sound was honestly pretty bad. In certain scenes the dubbing (since I suppose the sound recording got fucked or tehy didn't bother with it at the shooting) was just terrible, it almost felt like it was dubbed to a foreign language, it wasn't even close to waht the actors were saying. A scene with a horse also had some of the most unconvincing use of horse sound effects I've seen, it was like they weren't even trying to match up sound and picture.

And as for the awkward filming, to give another example, in the film there is a shot of a girl saying "Hello" to a boy, then she says "hello" again, and then the camera zooms in very slowly on her face while she's just staring, which goes on for a about 10 seconds. This type of awkward zooming is pretty prevalent in these older movies, and they just feel so incredibly awkward and weird, like the director doesn't know how to use the zoom, but there's barely any zooms in the movie, so what was the point of it?

My overall point (and opinion) is that these awkward and honestly pretty (from the viewpoint of today) amateurish quirks prevent me from enjoying the majority of older films. The actors are often overdramatic and unconvining, some movies have just weird and awkward direction while others are boring and obvious, and the sound and sound effects tend to be so poor it's distracting.

That said (so I don't come across as a complete pleb), I still liked Solaris (the main plot and tone were absolutely fantastic, existential and deep, while still focused on the characters, which is how it should be done), I really, really like 12 angry men (where didn't feel aged the slightest) and Rear Window quite fun, but honestly most of the classics I've scene have just aged poorly from a filmmaking point of view.
