Florence (06L - Northern Atlantic)

People from Daytona-Savannah, (and this goes for everyone in the path as well). I wouldn't anticipate this storm coming in our path just yet, but I would prepare for the eventuality that it does.

What does that mean?

I would gather any necessary home-defending supplies you need this weekend. Whether those are sandbags, window shutters, or any other protective devices, I would buy them now. It's foolish to not prepare for hurricane season in our area. It's even more foolish to be at Lowes 48hrs before a storm is due to hit and wasting valuable time trying to fight the masses who are under-prepared.

If you have people that you are responsible for, i.e., children or elderly, it would benefit you greatly to call those people who you would stay with in the eventuality of a direct landfall so that you can plan ahead and know that you have safe areas you can stay. If you have no one you can stay with, please check with your local officials, and they should be able to direct you to the nearest safe shelter. If you do have to go a shelter, please remember that space is very limited, so only pack the essentials. Bringing your own supplies of water, snacks, and boardgames will help immensely.

If I could not evacuate, I would check my home supplies. Once a storm passes, it is usually unholy, sweltering, muggy heat. Make sure your generator is working and has enough of an energy supply to let it at least keep a portion of your home cool for 48 hours. (Why 48 hours? Unless you suffer a direct hit, you should have power restored within 24-72 hours, Keeping enough gasoline to run a generator for anything longer than 3 days poses a risk to your home and your neighbors). Additionally, check all flashlights and other battery operated devices to make sure they work. You should have back-up batteries for said devices, check those back-up batteries to make sure they work. Keep the spare batteries in a sealable plastic container. Any important medicines should be nearby as well.

I can't believe I am saying this, but make sure your dishwasher, washer, and dryer are all empty. I can't stress this enough, they should be empty 24 hours before, especially if you are in a flood-zone along the coast, the intra-coastal waterway or riverways. Do extra laundry before the storm hits so you have extra clothes. If you have people you care for, pack a "travel bag" for each of them; clean clothes, basic hygiene supplies, and all necessary medicines.

Additionally, I would check to make sure I have enough bottled water to last 5 days for each person in my household. Why 5 days? You never know when your neighbors are under-prepared and they have no access to drinking water, and they come to your home.

Charge all of your devices, and all of your portable chargers. You do not want to be in a race against time to make sure that all of your electronics have the requisite battery in case you lose power for multiple days.

If you go shopping this weekend, do not buy anything that can quickly expire if it is left to the elements. Only the Lord should know what thawed pork without refrigeration should smell like.

If I forgot anything, please feel free to add. Hope this storm misses us all. But fellow redditors, please prepare! You never want to be caught with your pants down!
