The state's politics are a bit more complicated than that - Big Sugar is two billionaire families, both of which own both Democrat and Republican candidates.

The candidate they had been grooming for over a decade to be governor was Adam Putnam. DeSantis bucked Big Sugar and took that nomination from them.

Gillum is indebted to the Democratic Black Caucus of Florida for helping him beat Gwen Graham and the black caucus is for Big Sugar (i.e. for the poor, black farming community in the Glades). And his chief strategist is a lobbyist for one of the billionaire sugar families.

While Gillum is better than DeSantis on nearly every other environmental issue, it's not at all clear who the better candidate would be for ending sugar leases, getting a large footprint for the SB10 reservoir, and solving the toxic algae crisis.
