Florida Shooting: 50 Percent of Americans Now Want Nationwide Ban on Assault Weapons, Poll Shows

I do like your points but I have some issues with a few:

Make it illegal to have a full 15 round magazine in a gun, outside of someones house or a gun range.

Wouldn't this only matter to people who follow the law?

Restrict some of the AR 15's customizable options, and require training and seperate licensing for 'assault rifles'.

I don't see what is so special about the AR-15 when there are MANY of other rifles similar to it to include regular hunting rifles that actually use larger calibers. Also, what kind of custominzable options to limit and why? For required training and "assault rifles," I'm sorry, but an AR-15 isn't an assault rifle. It just isn't. In fact, many hunting rifles come in semi-auto and use .308 rounds which are deadlier than .556 round and many have 10-round magazines. Even bolt action could kill just as easily.

People can't own fully automatics, short barreled rifles, or heavy weapons/ordinance without a specific license.

The idea was originally intended to prevent people from wanting to buy and use these firearms, including machine guns, short-barreled shotguns, and SBR’s or short-barreled rifles. Many firearms dealers simply choose not to sell SBRs and other NFA firearms due to the special licensing demands. To sell NFA firearms, a FFL needs to have a SOT license commonly referred to as a “Class 3” license. So have you ever bought any one of those items? I have and you need to undergo a very lengthy process. The NFA requires the registration and taxation of certain guns.

If you think there's a personal Class 3 license to get around taxation and registration, there's not. If you want an NFA firearm, you need to get it registered and pay the tax. Short-barreled rifles are outright banned for individual ownership in Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.

  1. Find a Class 3 FFL Dealer

Before buying a gun, you have to locate a class 3 dealers in your area. Then contact them and let them know you're looking to buy a short barreled rifle, inquire as to their fees, if they have a specific ordering procedure, and make sure that you supply all of the information they request. The dealer will then place the order directly with us and we will immediately submit the paperwork to the NFA to transfer the short barreled rifle to the dealer.

  1. Pay the $200 NFA Tax

This is a one-time NFA tax when purchasing your SBR (or other class 3 item).

  1. File the Required Forms With The FFL Dealer

These include the ATF 5320.4, known as "Form 4," which needs to be signed by the Chief Law Enforcement Officer in your area along with copies of fingerprint cards from the police department.

Then you wait and wait and wait for probably at least 6 months but probably more. Also, your weapon's serial number is in the database, your personal info, a more detailed background check is performed, etc. The ATF needs to know where it is and anytime you shoot it, you need to have that paperwork with you to include an indoor shooting range. Period.

Guns aren't the entire problem. Parents and adults need to be better about securing their ammo and guns.

That's totally correct and should be part of the parent's responsibility. When I was in school (middle school), everyone took a hunter safety course where they taught you about a rifle, how it works, how to hold it safely, how to discharge it safely, etc. Great educational class.

Another thing about the ammo and guns securing, I don't see how we could enforce this unless you enforced gun safes but even then, how would someone enforce that and check it?

Schools need to be better about dealing with bullying and managing their pupil's online presence to some degree.

Definitely true. When I was a kid, bullying was a thing but it didn't seem as bad as it is nowadays - at least from what I hear. Then again, the whole avenue of online bullying didn't really exist when I was in school. Either that or kids are softer? Don't know plus I don't have kids either. I can say that we should have more security at schools. Doors that automatically lock or hallways doors that autolock for things like this. I think overall we can improve the school's security since they are a soft target.

My fear, is that we go full ban on 'assault weapons' and these situations keep happening but with pistols.

Totally agree. The real problem and why it is happening is the culture right now. Everyone is "liked" and wanting attention and fame online and to be noticed way more than they did 20 years ago. We also need to never name the killer or give unnecessary attention to them so copycats don't emerge which really seems the problem with these school shootings. It wouldn't be difficult for a kid to use a handgun (which is actually way more common than an AR-15) to do the same act or a knife or make homemade bombs using a pressure cooker, fireworks (powder) and some nails. Also, what if they pulled the fire alarm and used a large truck to just run over people who were then outside?

I totally agree that as a country we should be focusing more on mental health and understanding the mental culture of our youth more than trying to ban everything because of a handful of mentally ill kids. In the end, we would really be taking away freedoms from law-abiding citizens then doing any real good against criminals who don't follow the law to begin with.
