Football (Soccer) explain it to an American.

Which one is the biggest league?

Football is big everywhere. The best leagues you find, at the moment, in Europe.

I'll try to summarize the some of the leagues i rate (my own personal opinion)

  • Premier League (England)

Very entertaining league. A lot of good teams, from top to bottom. You have at least 5 teams at the start of the season who can contend for the title. Somewhat equal wealth distribution from tv deals have made this more competitve league.

  • La Liga (Spain)

Top heavy league where there are three great teams (Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid) some good teams and a lot of crap teams.

The top teams from this league do very well when playing other teams in Europe.

  • Bundesliga (Germany)

A one, sometimes two horse race nowadays. Top team is Bayern München. Other good team is Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen. There is a team called Schalke 04 and they are eternal chokers who will never win the league.

This league has great fans, because they care about afforadble tickets for supporters. You can somewhat sense the atmosphere when you watch matches from this league.

  • Serie A (Italy)

Also a somewhat one horse race with Juventus leading it currently. Used to be a great league, but has stagnated and the top teams have dropped in quality (specifically AC Milan and Inter Milan).

  • Portugese League

This is the eternal three teams league where the teams Porto, Benfica and Sporting compete for the title each year. It can be entertaining to watch because portugese people are funny and it's always dramatic.

The eternal chokers in this league is Sporting. Benfica are also eternal chokers, but only in european competitions.

There are two major european competitions: Champions League (where the best teams from the european leagues play) which had its final yesterday. Europa League (teams that are a tier under the best play) which had its final a few weeks ago.

How would I even go about watching Soccer in the states while it is airing overseas?

I suggest you start watching the Copa America that starts on Friday and then move on from there.
