For those in the East Bay or outside SF, What are ways that I can save money on commuting?

I was commuting from Santa Rosa (50 miles north) every day both ways 5 days a week for half of the Spring 2016 semester and what did I do to save money on commuting? I fucking moved, bro. I was spending over $500 a month on gas, not including wear on my car (which was immense mileage). With 870 for rent for my own room less than half a mile from school (Garfield Street) I am completely set.

The biggest thing is TIME. You might think you aren't spending a lot of money but ultimately you are spending a lot of TIME and TIME is MONEY!! I realized that, commuting over 20 hours a week (at least 1 hour there and back if I was doing 80 the whole way) was a waste of time. I could work 20 hours a week and move here and be spending, essentially, the exact same amount of money.

Realistically, I was commuting at least 3 hours a day, on average, 5 days a week. That's 15 hours per week, 6.50 GG Bridge toll every day, 100 miles on my car every day, 7$ parking every day... Stupid waste of time.

Best bet for people commuting over 40 miles a day, honestly, is to just get a PT job and move here. If you are spending 10 or 15 hours a week commuiting plus 3 or 400 a month, you might as well rent a room for 6 or 700 in daily shitty or here if you are lucky. I got lucky with my place.
