For those who consistently work out first thing in the morning, how have you developed and maintained such discipline?

Man here.

I like to lift weights. In over 10 years of training, I've put on 35 pounds of body-weight, with an estimated 20-25 pounds of it being muscle. (I've gained both fat and muscle.)

At this point, weight training is like brushing my teeth in the sense that I feel obligated to do it for myself. I'd actually give up teeth brushing before I'd give up weight training, if forced to give up one or the other.

As for how I started training in the morning?

After the baby was born, I was struggling to lift weights 3-4 hours per week (which I think is ideal...more than that is actually too much OR you're training to easy). So I changed things up to shorter but even more difficult training sessions. Now I'm training 2ish hours per week. It's not as good, but still does the job, more or less.

One day I realized: "Hey, since these workouts are shorter, I could do this in the morning, when wife and baby are sleeping...and also not have to stress about working out after work on those days I get stuck working late."

The downside is, because I'm waking up at about 5am (because I GET to work by 6:30am), I'm basically exhausted by 8pm. I usually fall asleep putting the baby to sleep. (We co-sleep, so I lay with the baby until she falls asleep. And I usually do too!)
