Ford government proposes scrapping OHIP's out-of-country medical coverage | CBC News

It's nice to see people have had positive experiences with emergency travel coverage.

I still dispute the fact that good travel insurance is "cheap".

If you are less than 40 and need to cover a week at an all-inclusive, it's probably fine and affordable.

But if you are 50+ and take medications for anything at all (high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol), the off-the-shelf products won't cover much if anything happens to you because anything can be considered pre-existing.

People that want to take long cruises or winter for months in Florida are going to have sticker shock at how much good insurance costs. And the good insurance comes with lengthy confusing questionnaires without any guidance to get the quote, and they can use any wromg answers later against you to void your policy if they so desire to wiggle out of high payouts.

Of course, cancelling OHIPs meagre coverage really doesn't impact this at all.
