Fort Uncle Billy

Out of the way virgin Fort Lee, the chad Fort William H. Carney is coming back home to VA.

  • He was born a Virginian slave in 1840
  • Successfully escaped to the north via the Underground Railroad
  • Enlisted with the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry once he got it there in 1863 and was promoted to sergeant soon after
  • Fought in the Second Battle of Fort Wagner and sustained several serious wounds, at least two of which thought to be gunshot wounds
  • When this absolute legend saw the color guard fall in battle, he took it upon himself not only to retrieve the colors, but to march them forward despite the injuries he had already sustained
  • When Union forces were eventually forced to retreat under fire, he struggled to return to friendly lines but he did made it and with the colors still in hand,
  • On arriving there
  • His actions that day led to his becoming the first African American to be awarded the Medal of Honor. Somewhat strangely though, the medal itself wasn't awarded until 1900
