The EMS unions in the US are garbage in comparison to other areas. I’ve held multiple positions with my local and know from first hand experience that the National and our rep could not have cared any less about us.

They’d whine to us if they couldn’t finish negotiations in the first three day block that they scheduled and wouldn’t even give us simple advice on things. We were having safety issues like a wheel actually falling off of an ambulance on the way back from a call and they told us that our workplace safety concerns were managements problem and did nothing.

IAEP basically did nothing for us but take our union dues and tell us we should be thankful for 1% to 2% raises. I’ve been here nearly 15 years and make less than $15/hr and we had a union for 14 of those years. It got us absolutely no where.

People on here will say that the local needed to do more but our local was motivated but had no real resources. The national wouldn’t even do union steward training for anyone. So until the US has EMS unions that are actually motivated to go to bat for the workers paying their dues, like the nursing unions do, I’m not paying another dime in union dues.
