i found this point washed up on carmel beach in california about 10 years ago... wondering how long it had been in the ocean.

oh.. okay... well the ruler shows the size, which is about 2 centimeters long... and i tried to make it a clear picture ...i guess i could try again to see if i could make it clearer.

good to know its obsidian!

i think it is the tip of an arrowhead because it is not huge... my first thought was it was lost when the hunter was fishing or hunting sea otter or seal... but there are a couple of streams nearby and, also, the materials off shore seem to move up and down the coast. (seeing something wash up one day and then a few days later it washes up again north of the first washup site)

my question, at the end, was if any of you knew anything about timing on encrustations of saltwater on shells, rocks and whatever is in the water, i am sure for a long period of time, on the bottom of the cove or bay.

i was hoping you all would know about telltale indications of age, such as build up of this white stuff and what it might be.

thanks.

btw i am not a collector... i found this 10 years ag
