So I found this thread about some of HPMOR's most glaring flaws, have some thoughts of my own

I'm amazed that the majority of people on here are defending the biggest flaws in HPMOR. I know you guys all love HPMOR. I like HPMOR too, but it is VERY far from being an optimal or even sufficient introduction to rationality like it was intended to be. Has everyone forgotten that if you can't criticize you can't optimize? There have been multiple attempts so far to make a web series or play or tv show or whatever retelling of HPMOR, and they have all failed, either because it did not have enough support or because it seemed like too much work to make HPMOR better.

So here's the list of HPMOR's major self-defeating flaws:

  • Lack of science

  • Lack of time in-story for characters to realistically grow in scientific knowledge and maturity as fast as they do. ("...the first 99 explanations you come up with are wrong, the 100th is right.")

  • Hermione and McGonagall lack agency in the story compared to other characters, such as Draco and Snape.

  • Flamel/Yaga's lack of agency and even presence in the story, despite the fact that they're 600 years old, have amassed a lot of magical artifacts and lore, taught Dumbledore, and whose values directly oppose Harry's own, possibly even more so than Voldemort's do.

  • Harry's lack of curiosity, or that his curiosity is informed more than shown. I.e. after he finds out about the existence of magic, witches and wizards, and Hogwarts, he thinks "The March of Reason will just have to start over, that's all; we still have the experimental method and that's the important thing." A true Ravenclaw would have thought something like: "I don’t know what the hell is going on here, but I’ll get to the bottom of this."

  • certain author tracts which are interesting but completely irrelevant to the story.

Whether you consider these things to be flaws or not doesn't change the fact that they are there. Instead of everyone coming up with reasons to excuse or justify these flaws, maybe we could discuss how things could have been done better?
