Fracking to start in Lancashire amid angry protests

So here's some interesting information in regards to fracking. They use old depleted oil drilling wells, which is often below the water tables. They inject some really nasty chemicals into the ground which hyper expand when frozen. They then freeze this slurry, which in turn causes the nearby shale to release natural gas into the wells which is then collected.

How do we know that the slurry does not get into the water table? Because the oil well doesn't fill up with water, which means its not in contact with the water table.

So how does the water get poisoned? Some believe that the fracking causes the gas to be fracked into the water supply. But there is no definite proof. Your best bet is to take water samples around the well for a couple of kilometers, and have them tested PRIOR to the fracking process starting.
