Has "Waifu" lost its original meaning on this sub in the past few weeks/months or has it always been this offhand criticism? I thought it was supposed to be a fun term to describe a likable anime girl who you would be interested in romantically. Alot of the most popular anime girls of all time (Asuka from NGE, Holo from S&W, Senjogahara from Monogatari, etc) are some of the most popular choices in Waifu threads since they are so liked by a large group of people.

But recently I've been seeing alot of "All the characters in the show are just Waifus!" and "That character is nothing but Waifubait!" which left me kind of confused. What I thought was the definition of the term speaks nothing of a characters quality and one can claim any character as a Waifu. I'm assuming they are trying to say that the character isn't a character beyond looking pretty without outright stating it or analyzing the show. I dunno if this usage is just recent or if its always been used like this but has it irked anyone else how casually it's being thrown around?
