Do French speakers split year numbers up like English speakers?

I have a french tutor from france who has told me to use a number of anglacisms. Not this one in specific but his argument is that I will be understood, if I go to france anytime in the next four months no one is going to mistake me for a native french speaker, and my speech will overall be more fluid although not technically correct.

If I was in a classroom instead of italki I dont think he would have said this, but speaking as a native francophone person I think he's basically saying spit it out so its understood because if for whatever reason I have to explain myself it's better I convey what I want to convey than spend 3 minutes trying to say the year co rrectly.
