French troops attack German tanks during the Battle of France, 1940. Painter unknown to me. [1280x800]

The armor could take a hit, sure, but it was not superior. The painting illustrates this well when we see the commander/gunner having to pop out of the back to spot targets effeciently at the expense of ability to fire.

These tanks didn't stand a chance. My stomach turns everytime I see the embodiment of the maginot line, trench warfare reimagined, mass-produced as a tank. The tank being the very thing designed to destroy trench warfare.

Before I'm called out, the maginot line would have destroyed anything thrown at it, but only from Germany to the west. There was barely a sense of maneuver warfare in the French Military at the time. And, anyone who appreciates that the French army has won more battles than any other military, like myself, simply finds that even more frustrating... with my perfect hindsight vision...
