To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Revival. The themes are extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of real rap most of the bars will go over a typical listener’s head. There’s also Em’s ability to rhyme literally every word, which is deftly woven into literally every song- his personal philosophy draws heavily from rhymezone.com, rock and roll, and rapists, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these lyrics, to realise that they’re not just a bunch of words that rhyme that are thrown together in no apparent order and with no real meaning whatsoever- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Revival truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the brilliance of Em’s greatest bar of all time “I’m so narcissistic, when I fart I sniff it, do a fake dab and sniff my armpits with it,” which itself is a cryptic reference to the European Journal of Social Psychology’s study on Interpersonal Odor and Disgust. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Rick Rubin’s genius wit unfolds itself on their dumb little ears.
