A friend shared this on my newsfeed. This guy absolutely nails it in regards to the Chapel Hill Shootings.

If I may say something:

I am a Sikh in the US who keeps some facial hair, is brown, and wears a turban. Most people assume I am a Muslim [1]. I get to experience a lot of what the average Muslim in the US faces (probably more than your average Muslim). I have a deep respect for the hijabis in particular because wearing a hijab in shows deep courage and commitment, and I know first hand because I get a reminder of that every morning as I tie my turban while reciting my prayers before stepping out of the house.

The overwhelming number of people I have met in many different parts of the US are extremely respectful to me. I am constantly reminded about pork in the food I might be ordering. People approach me with questions about Islam, trying to get a better understanding of it (and I try to clarify them given my readings about it, and generally point them to quran.com or Nouman Ali Khan's videos). Stares are common but thats perfectly fine :). Every time there is a major event where "Muslims" are blamed, I do get cautious; but invariably, someone will ask my opinion trying to give me a chance to explain.

It makes me proud to be an American and be among the best of people. I've had active duty US marines stand up for me when a drunken idiot started getting aggressive. I've had strangers get more angry than me when some racist prick yelled out slurs.

To the American Muslims in this sub, I just want to say that there are a lot of good people in this country. Sikhs have faced tremendous challenges since they first arrived here in the 1800s, and especially since 9/11 (the worst being the Oak Creek massacre). But I know how much this country has helped and genuinely cared for the Sikh community. And I know from my experiences how much the average American cares for Muslims as well.

So, keep your taqwa and be in Chardi Kala. God bless.

[1] Including Muslims! I have been offered the "halal menu" at a Turkish owned pizza shop. Another time, a Turk flat out asked me which Madhab I followed (he said he followed Hanafi). I think I might look a little turkish.
