From a city planning standpoint, which unique or common-sense features of your European city/country do you think increase livability and civilian happiness?

Yeah, that kind of development has become trendy lately. We call it 'mixed-use,' and buildings like this are being built in and around Portland. Tearing down three or four small homes and building a 4/5 story building with retail spaces on the ground floor. But there are a lot of frustrated folks over here, mostly due to the fact that most of what is being built is too expensive for displaced folks who don't make $100k/yr. (Slightly exaggerating, but it's like $1,500/mo for one of these newer 450sf (42sm) studio apartments) Also NIMBYs who are against tearing down old houses and having their views blocked are creating a lot of roadblocks to sustainable, high density developments. We're hoping the market evens out, because we have no rent control and very little subsidized housing. It's a tricky situation.
