From Sporting Lisbon to Athletic Bilbao — why do we get foreign clubs' names wrong?

Every time I see someone purposely using the incorrect "English" name for a non-English club, it is slightly irritating. Every single one of the examples given are commonly misused by ignorant English/British people:

  • Sporting CP (Sporting Clube do Portugal), not "Sporting Lisbon"
  • PSV (Philips Sport Vereniging), not "PSV Eindhoven"
  • Celtic, not "Glasgow Celtic"
  • Rangers, not "Glasgow Rangers"
  • Athletic Club, not "Athletic Bilbao"
  • Milan or AC Milan, not just "AC"
  • Inter or Internazionale, though "Inter Milan" is not wrong either
  • Madrid or Real Madrid, not just "Real" - this example is not actually listed in the article but is also technically incorrect
  • Crvena Zvezda (Red Star), not "Red Star Belgrade"
  • Reducing Borussia Dortmund or Borussia Mönchengladbach to just "Borussia" is also incorrect
