Frugal way to shop for a suit that fits well?

Check out what /r/frugalmalefashion has to say about suiting. This should be your first stop.

In general, the quality of suit you buy totally depends on your budget. The general suggestion is to buy a 100% wool suit in a slim fit (most places slim fit aren't very slim, its just slimmer than the baggy 90s suits that are around but I guess in the case of frugality the fit is subjective). Its better to buy grey or blue since they're the most versatile colors. You should always expect to get your suit tailored so budget for that as well.

You'll find the best deals at thrift stores but they're very ymmv. If you have time, this may be a good option.

If you're looking ~$100, a JC Penney suit is a good option. Claiborne has a textured slim fit wool suit that I bought for about $80. I didn't like the fit of this suit very much so I returned it. I currently have a Stafford Executive Super 100 wool in Navy which I got for $130. I like this suit, it feels significantly better than the $80 one.

If you can push your budget more look at J Crew factory (thompson) or the Macy's Bar III suit. These both are a better quality than the JCP suits. With a good sale you'll be able to buy these around $200-$250.

If you can push your budget more, you're looking at a ton of more options. SuitSupply is a great choice (they're $400+). You may also find something made to order in this price range.
