Frustration after lesson

Before I was very inconsistent with where my shot would go and now I feel as if I'm hitting more bad shots but they are the same bad shots over and over.

This might seem like a bad thing but it's actually a step in the right direction. Golf is all about repeating the same swing over and over. If your shots before were going all over the place, there's no way to really tell what the problem is. Having a consistent miss that's always the same means you're repeating your swing better and fixing it can be done with the next lesson or at least get you on the right path.

Right now I feel as if I've become worse but is it a case of 1 step backwards 2 steps forwards kind of thing?

Right now it could certainly be that. If you've been playing for a while and having bad form what you need to do is break those habits. Your mind wants you to do what your instructor is saying but sometimes your body is so used to the old way of doing it. If you're breaking those habits and getting a consistent swing that's missing in the same direction, it's just a matter of getting the next step forward. Now that you're getting forward shaft lean, it could be changing the face angle of your club or your swing path. While you've got the forward lean and a more consistent swing, you've just changed another variable that will need to be fixed while building off the first change.

I have a friend who has an open stance and hits every club in this big slice. I've shown him how to fix it and he can hit the ball straight but he isn't comfortable and goes back to his old swing. Then he gets mad when it shots slices more than he wants. He keeps saying it's not comfortable but comfortable doesn't work for him. I made plenty of changes that weren't comfortable because the results were better. They become comfortable after repeating them a bunch because your body just had bad muscle memory.
