Fujifilm X-T3 for Wedding Videography

I shot my last wedding last year with the X-T2 + battery grip & X-Pro2 after 10 years of shooting weddings on Nikon FX cameras, mainly the D750. My wife shot second with the X-T20 (so we had 3 x series cameras with us).

I loved shooting with the X-T2. I hated the X-Pro2. I expected it to be the other way around, but the X-T2 was the clear winner for me.

My favorite things were:

The camera was so light. More than a few times I actually forgot I was carrying it. I’ve been a prime shooter most of my wedding career, but the X series and primes are so light. Normally after a wedding I’m in pain. But not with the x series.

I love the ergonomics of the X-T2. It just feels fun to shoot. It feels like a camera first, technology second instead of the other way around. I know that sounds stupid for people who fell in love with photography during the digital age - but I fell in love in the dark room and a lot of things about digital photography have somewhat dampened that love. The X-T2 (and I’m sure X-T3) go a LONG way towards restoring that.

The whole camera system is snappy, quick, and easy to use for my shooting style. The little joystick lets me effortlessly set my focus points, which I do frequently. The EVF makes adjusting for lighting conditions easy - though it’s a double edged sword I’ll hit on in a second.

All the Fuji lenses kick ass. Like, every one I’ve used is great. Even the cheaper primes are amazing. In fact I’m considering selling off my 1.4 primes for the 2 primes.

Things I didn’t like:

I’m hoping this was a one off situation and it HAS happened to me with my Nikons, but I was turned off that it happened during the first and only ceremony I shot. The X-T2 with the battery grip completely froze as the bride was coming down the aisle with her dad. Luckily I always have a second camera so I swapped and shot a little tighter, but it was a huge disappointment. This was the only error I’ve ever had with the X-T2 so far.

The EVF is kinda tough to shoot with. You can set it to preview the wb and exposure settings, but then you’ll have issues if you tend to underexpose like I sometimes do. You can also set it to auto adjust to conditions, but then if you’re not paying attention to your light meter your exposure will be off. I tend to use the preview mode most, but it is a slight change from a normal optical viewfinder. It takes some getting used to.

The autofocus seems... different... from the D750s. I can’t put my thumb on it, and I’m used to it now. But it felt slower or jerkier or something. Just different. I used to shoot a lot of low light theater and dance with the D750 but I’m not sure I could with the X-T2. It’s not a total deal breaker since I shoot a lot of manual focus anyways, but it is definitely a factor to get used to.

Having swapped for nearly a year now I prefer the Fuji X series over the Nikon FX cameras. Weight, size, ergonomics, 4K 60fps, log video, constant updates even after a replacement is on the market... there’s a lot to love about Fuji. Nikon’s a great camera and their full frame mirroless camera is tempting, but the additional required adaptor for all my lenses would have killed that option for me anyways. And they just don’t released firmware like Fuji does.

Here’s a sample from the D750 and one from the Fuji X-T2. Can you tell which is which?
