This is funny.

I wish it wasn't. The mentally ill disproportionately smoke more than the average population. It's a strong coping mechanism for many of them. A lot of inpatient psychiatric wards have banned all smoking (for obvious reasons). The problem being that while this is healthier physically, it harms their psychological health by being cut off in a difficult time.

I was a smoker admitted to a psych ward and not being allowed to smoke drove me insane and made me feel more anxious and miserable during the whole situation.

There certainly is a discussion to be had here. I actually had a psychiatrist recommend that I smoke when needed because it calmed me down greatly from panic attacks and other bad things. A risk of cancer later in life is worth it to prevent a risk of suicide earlier in life.
