Gaggia classic steam knob mod

Honestly I have had even heat resistant glass (literally coffee cups!) just explode on me coming out of a commercial dishwasher after the steam cycle or because I was being daft steaming directly into them.

They are heat resistant, but heat resistant glasses do still exhibit heat stress. Typically heat alone won't do it, but a small imperfection (chips) and heat can still lead to the glass shattering, it is just way less likely. It's even more likely to cause failure with uneven heating of the glass surface (like a heavily directed stream of steam!). That's why so many glass oven doors explode when people place a hot cast iron pot into them (that and heat resistant glass is more prone to failure through impact when hot).

I absolutely agree with you it's very unlikely and in domestic settings eh, can't say I worry about it. But I can totally get it in a cafe, where it is a relatively minor thing to avoid and the clean up of glass in the middle of busy service can be such a nightmare.
