This is far from the worst, but somewhat disturbing and something I would guess other girl gamers go through. I have a neutral name, nothing masculine or feminine about it.
Was playing Sticks and Stones a couple of weeks ago in BOIIII (side note, what the fuck Treyarch, writing that out makes me feel like Kratos). I was absolutely wrecking it, and I have no idea how seeing as how I hadn’t played any multiplayer in a while, let alone Sticks and Stones.
Well after the fifth consecutive match of coming in first with mostly the same lobby, this dude starts cussing me out. “You’re a loser, no life, bet you spend all of your time playing this,” etc. Well the next match, I tomahawk him near the end in a panic (in S&S, crossbow and ballistic knife kills give you points, but tomahawking someone will take them back to 0 points). He just goes ballistic, saying he hopes my family dies, hopes I die, hopes my pets die, just whatever comes to mind.
I switch on my mic (I play muted when I’m solo, only really use it for call outs in Search and Destroy) and apologize, telling him I honestly just freaked out since there was ~10 seconds left and I was in first, out of all other ammo, and afraid of being bankrupted. Dude all of a sudden changes his tune, “oh that’s okay! I was just joking! You wanna party up after this? You’re so good at this!” All this sweet shit. Like dude, you were just having a mental breakdown over this, but when you hear I’m a girl, the switch flips?
A lot of guys (definitely not all) are so fucking weird when it comes to girl gamers online, I swear. They either want to court you or rape you.
